Blogging Revisited

It has been too long since I have blogged. Like most things, you just have to make time. All of the wonderful activities that occurred in DeBordieu, Georgetown, and Pawleys Island this past weekend are simply too good not to share. So more folks can enjoy the many events and activities that our area offers, I will make an attempt to create a calendar with the dates and times so you can participate if you are in the the area. It goes without saying that we were blessed with gorgeous fall weather and temps in the 70's to enjoy all of this.

Within the last four days, DeBordieu enjoyed its annual "creek night", a wonderful event celebrating the appreciation we all have for our creeks and inlet and enjoyed the bounty that came from our local waters. A great opportunity for food and fellowship. In addition, the DeBordieu Club golf course was busy with two concurrent golf tournaments, The Club Championship and The Presidents Cup. At Pawleys Island, Brookgreen Gardens hosted their annual Fall Festival. A weekend long event in which the nations largest outdoor sculpture garden celebrates fall with events, tours, and music. Just down the road, the City of Georgetown hosted the 20th Annual Wooden Boat Show. A showcase of both wooden boat building and boat restoration, the streets were filled with people enjoying the many gleaming boats and the boat race at the end of the day.

Between now and the end of the year their will be more opportunities to enjoy the many events our area hosts. I will keep you posted!

HATCHING SOON – At a Walkway Near You

Just beyond beach walkway 12, dozens of excited children (and adults) watch with delight as 6 baby loggerheads begin their adorable clumsy crawl from the dunes to the ocean’s edge. Volunteers remind the little ones to “freeze” if a wave sends the hatchlings swirling, so none get accidentally stepped on.

The long slog to the water seems endless, given the mere 2-inch size of the participants, but according to Betsy Brabson, the hike is necessary in order for the turtles to “imprint” on this beach. After all, DeBordieu Beach is where the females will return in 25 or so years to dig their own nests.

The 32 nests currently in DeBordieu have begun hatching and will be keeping S.C.U.T.E. (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) volunteers busy through October. Led by project coordinator Betsy Brabson, our own expert 25-member turtle team keeps close tabs on the loggerhead nests on DeBordieu and neighboring Hobcaw Barony beach.

The volunteers, who complete a training program and receive certification by the SC Department of Natural Resources, diligently patrol the beaches each morning searching for the tractor-like tracks indicating that a loggerhead has nested on the beach. The nest are marked with an orange sign, dated, and protected by a distinctive orange mesh covering. In addition to recording nesting and hatching activity, S.C.U.T.E. volunteers are authorized to move nests to a more appropriate location if the mother loggerhead has chosen a spot too close to the water, or any other precarious location.

After carefully monitoring the nests to assure a successful outcome, the work is still not done. Each nest is inventoried 3 days post-hatch. By counting the leathery egg shells, the volunteers deduce number of eggs in the clutch and the hatching success rate. Many times the volunteers find “late bloomer” baby turtles that haven’t quite managed to dig themselves out of the deep nest unassisted. They are carefully placed in a bucket until the nest contents are accounted for and documented for reporting to the DNR.

Then the fun can begin. The turtles are gently removed from their bucket and begin the journey towards the ocean, much to the delight of the crowd.

If you would like to participate, nest inventory announcements are posted 1 or 2 days beforehand at the Beach Club pool kiosk.

July 4th

With summer now in full swing I took a little time yesterday evening to enjoy our beautiful beach. I didn't arrive until 7:00pm, but one of the great things about that time of day is very few people, cooler temperatures, and great sunsets. I took this photo with my iPhone of the DeBordieu Beach Club at sunset, quality isn't great, but the setting sure is!

July 4th is a great time at DeBordieu and between the beach, inlet, social events, and family gatherings, everyone should be exhausted by Monday. Happy 4th to all!

DeBordieu marketing update

Hi to all! We have been rather busy with our marketing lately and I thought I'd give you some idea of where you might find DeBordieu in the media. Ginny and Caroline, my marketing staff, have had their hands full in keeping everything fresh and up to date in our new world of instant electronic access. Besides the everyday activity of keeping up our website and inner office material, below are some of the things that are new or are in addition to our regular marketing efforts.

Last week we ran our first homesite exclusive advertisement in the local Coastal Observer which we are following up this week with a similar ad that is villa exclusive. We are hoping to expose everyone locally to a much broader array of the real estate opportunities available at DeBordieu than the home ads usually found in that publication.

On a similar note, look for us on the inside back cover of Garden & Gun magazine this month as well as a DeBordieu feature in the 14th year anniversary edition of duPont Registry being published this month as well.

DeBordieu Rentals, in an effort to improve our exposure to discerning vacationers, has recently established partnerships with ResortQuest, an international vacation rental management company, HomeAway, the worlds largest online database of vacation rental property, and Flipkey, a website featuring vacation rentals with online reviews from vacationers. As an independent partner, DeBordieu Rentals is featured with either a link to our website or our properties themselves through their online portals, giving us the ability to introduce DeBordieu to a new group of individuals looking to experience the DeBordieu community and lifestyle.

As always, http://www.debordieu.com/ is your best source for information on DeBordieu Colony real estate sales and rentals. With summer here, DeBordieu is at full stride with a variety of community and club activities scheduled over the next few months to take advantage of the season, links to the community and club sights can be found at http://www.debordieu.com/ as well. I hope to see you here soon and thanks for checking out our Blog!
